Adversus Solem ne Loquitor (Do not argue with the sun)

So that was a long break since the last post, and there has been a lot of action since. The Up With Hope project was presented at the 11th annual Global Leadership Forum in Istanbul to delegates from all over the world and had an amazing reception. The Up With Hope support group is constantly growing and continues to be the backbone of this organization. With out people's support and belief in our cause we would never have been able to have accomplished all of our goals and more. I'll be in Nairobi within a few weeks to continue relations with the groups who have been working endlessly in the centres since we left. I'm excited to see what 2010 is going to bring Up With Hope. I will definetily be updating this often when I am back in the hot, noisy, sleepless and amazing metropolis of Nairobi.

Something big has happened. I feel almost for the first time that these businesses have a solid future in recycling. Through our inexhaustable networking, we met a company that started to buy our shredded plastic. For three reasons it is a big deal. Reason #1: They come to our centre to buy the plastic. Instead of us having to pay money to hire a truck and lug it over with a bunch of guys, sometimes not even being able to sell it. Reason #2:They are Kenyans. They understand the dynamics of people in low income areas. Not other nationals who are extremely apprehensive about working with people from poor neighborhoods. Reason #3:This business that started buying from us is as old as we are in the business, but they are a lot more succesful. The reason being is they had start up capital. In conclusion it proves that people with money to invest are finding Recycling to be a worthwhile endeavor. Moving Mountains

For me, Jim Green is and was one of the most important people that I have never interacted with in my life. Yesterday Jim died. I’ve never gotten a chance to thank him personally for the work that he did in the community that I grew up in, the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, but I’m pretty sure he knows the impact that he’s had. If it wasn’t for him, there likely would be no Four Sisters housing co-op, which I only lived in briefly but is where I spent most of my childhood. You would think that growing up in the poorest neighbourhood in all of Canada would make you feel like a second-class citizen or be something that people might hold against you. Not so much at Four Sisters. At Four Sisters we had the best basketball and hockey tournaments, the best summer programs and when the Grizzlies came to town, there were always tickets to games care of Jim.
